Wollaton Park Walk ReportSunday 31st July 2011It was a glorious sunny day for members who met for aslow relaxing walk through the beautiful grounds ofWollaton Park and we were treated to well maintainedgardens in full bloom. The highlight of the walk was surely the sight of two fullygrown adult female Roe Deer walking into the lake tograze on the lily flowers. Seeing these creatures so closeup was the icing on the cake on what was an enjoyableand relaxing afternoon. As is customary on these occasions, we finished off witha well earned drink and ice cream in the courtyard Caféfollowed by a visit around the Steam Museum wherethere were working engines on display, a must for anyoneinterested in such things.
Members Social Evening - 25th August(Including New Members Evening)Around 18 members and committee came together for our annual new members evening, which was followed by a general social for all members. We met in the Pitcher & Piano in Nottingham, which is quite a unique kind of bar, being that it is in a de-consecrated church. Fiona had planned ahead and reserved us the Alter area of the church/bar so we were quite private and free to talk about anything at all.We were joined by Danny Brogan from Convatec and a young ileostomist from Chesterfield, Philippa, who was interested to meet other younger members of IA and it was great to be able to meet and welcome them both. All members received a free drink and around 8:00pm a selection of hot and cold platters were provided, which I might add went like hot cakes. The evening was a success and gave our newer members an opportunity to meet up with other members and chat in informal surroundings about their experiences. We are always keen to welcome new members and have a steady stream of people joining the Association which means our membership is slowly increasing and now stands at over 200.
Report on the Attenborough Nature Reserve Walk, 7th May 2011A total of sixteen members and friends met outside the Attenborough Nature Reserve Visitor Centre on what turned out to be a warm and sunny afternoon. This was after a morning of rain so we were all prepared for the worst with coats and umbrellas etc. but thankfully they were not needed. We walked the Kingfisher trail, which is about 2 miles around the nature reserves many ponds that are teeming with a wide variety of wildlife, especially birds. Recent sightings at the Nature Reserve have included a Red Kite and Osprey. And soon, it’s hoped that the Kingfisher and Bittern will also put in an appearance. The group set off on a leisurely walk which gave us all an opportunity to chat and share experiences. There was a mixture of people with ileostomies, pouches and those dear to us who have shared our journeys. It was great to walk and talk in a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful setting, made all the more enjoyable for a warm sunny day. Opportunities were taken to view the wildlife through the hides dotted around the reserve, although it was suspected some took this as an opportunity for a rest. Having walked alongside the River Trent for a while we turned back to the car park and thoughts eventually and inevitably, turned to the tea and cake awaiting us at the end. After a sit down and well-earned refreshments we said farewell to each other and made our way home. There was a unanimous thumbs up for this activity and members said that they would like to do it again so we are now looking at a similar event at another local beauty spot, so keep visiting these pages for the latest updates. To see how much we all enjoyed the day visit the event photo page.
